AQUA-5 DRY is the result of over 35 years of experience with the use of natural microbacteria (freeze-dried micro-organisms). constant competition among the different types of microorganisms, as each bacterial population wants to grow as large as possible. That is why it is extremely important to regularly add beneficial bacteria to our small biological systems, i.e. koi and garden ponds.
However, this does not require numerous different agents, such as extra starter bacteria, sludge-degrading bacteria or liquid bacteria. For heavily polluted ponds, or to start the filter in spring or for newly constructed ponds, simply use double the dose of AQUA-5 DRY. Nevertheless, AQUA-5 DRY offers extremely good value for money, as a 280-gram tin has a bacterial density of more than 80 trillion per gram and is therefore sufficient to treat 150,000 litres of pond water once. What use is a 5-litre canister of liquid bacteria, for example, if it contains 99% water and the bacteria living in it have already died due to lack of food or old age? To prevent this, only a few bacteria are usually added to such nutrient liquids and the shelf life is often stated as only 6 months. However, AQUA-5 DRY bacteria have a shelf life of up to 3 years or more and are only activated by water and oxygen, whereupon they immediately begin their work with fresh vigour.

What effect do the microbacteria have in a koi pond?
AQUA-5 DRY ensures a healthy pond biology and provides effective protection against toxins in the pond water through a multi-stage nitrification process.
When organic material such as fish excrement and other waste products decompose, toxins are inevitably produced in the water, which must be removed. At an oxygen content of 60%, the first bacterial strains in AQUA-5 DRY begin their work and convert ammonia/ammonium into nitrite through the so-called Nitrosomonas bacteria. The nitrite, which is also toxic, is then converted into the more harmless nitrate in the second step of the decomposition process by the Nitrobacter bacteria. This is harmless as long as
the nitrate content does not exceed the limit of 50 mg per litre.Some of the nitrate is used by pond plants as a source of nutrients
.The rest is converted into nitrogen by the remaining bacteria in the AQUA-5 DRY in the anaerobic zones and released into the ambient air. Clear water is actually

AQUA-5 DRY Take one heaped tablespoon of AQUA-5 DRY per 10,000 litres per week and soak the bacterial cultures in a few litres of pond water for about an hour (not much longer, as bacteria die without food after about 2 hours). Stir well several times during this time or attach an air diffuser. Then use a cup to distribute the activated solution evenly in the pond and filter, or over the stream. The minerals and enzymes that
settle at the bottom of the bucket must also be added to the pond in their entirety. Please do not add in direct sunlight; it is better to do so in the evening. Any cloudiness will disappear within a few hours. UV lamps should be switched off for at least 24 hours, or preferably permanently.
UV lamps kill many of the bacteria and microorganisms that pass through them, causing the water to become unnaturally sterilised. Therefore, only switch them on in an emergency. Please also switch off any protein skimmers, as these remove nutrients from the bacteria. Ensure that the filter and pond are always well aerated. For sea and salt water, always use double the dose of AQUA-5 DRY.
For heavily polluted ponds, use double the amount of AQUA-5 DRY and repeat weekly until a significant improvement is visible.
Once the system is well established, a 4-week re-dosage is sufficient. Subsequent re-dosage should be based on your own experience. Depending on the pond, sunlight exposure and fish stock, 6 weeks may also be sufficient. For optimal effect, the filter flow should be set so that the water flows through the filter media for at least 10 minutes.
Shelf life of bacteria: Store in a cool, dry place; shelf life 2 to 3 years.
We repeatedly find that many basic things are not known, which often leads to serious mistakes with nasty consequences. For example, every koi owner should be aware that the filter must run day and night. If you switch off the filter in the evening and only switch it back on again the next morning, you are effectively pumping manure into the pond. This is because the biology in the filter dies after just a few hours, the water then turns and ammonia and nitrite form. You should always ensure that the filter has a good oxygen supply via an air diffuser, as this is extremely important for the metabolism of the bacteria.

Instead, you should intervene calmly and biologically to ensure that not only the fish but also the koi owner is happy with the environment and can see their beloved pets clearly. However, a short layer of algae on the pond walls is healthy nature and should therefore be viewed positively.
AQUA-5 DRY is not a miracle cure, as is sometimes claimed, but it does offer a concentrated dose of biology that can be used to maintain a healthy and clear pond in the long term.
If success is not achieved within two to three weeks, the following points should be checked immediately and remedied if necessary:
- Is there sufficient oxygen in the filter and pond?
- Is the pH value between 6.5 and 8?
- Is there too much dissolved phosphate in the water?
- Is iron-rich well water being used?
- If inorganic suspended solids are clouding the water, the filter flow must be reduced or the filter materials in the last chamber must be compacted to filter out the solids. Bead filters always require a longer start-up phase, as bacteria colonise moving filter material much less easily.
Koi and pond care is not an easy hobby, and water care is a closed book to many koi enthusiasts. AQUA-5 DRY can be a decisive aid here, because technology has almost no influence on pH value, nitrite, phosphates, etc. A healthy biology is the first line of defence here. A surface skimmer should also be installed in every pond to break up the water surface and suck up dirt. During the summer months, air diffusers should also be used in the pond (approx. 30 cm above the ground), as the plants release oxygen during the day, but at night the plants, bacteria and fish consume the oxygen in the pond. This is why aeration at night is extremely important, especially in warm temperatures. The use of a UV lamp can be very useful here.
Any necessary disease treatments in the pond must be completed by the beginning of September, as water temperatures below 15 degrees significantly or completely reduce the effectiveness of almost all medications. Keep in mind that a single sick koi can cause a parasite explosion, so no new koi should be added to the pond after September. However, AQUA-BIO-5® should be used preventively here.
In autumn, a high-fat feed with a fat content of approx. 10% should be administered. This promotes the build-up of fat deposits and prevents energy deficiency syndrome in spring. Please note that excessive, unbalanced feeding before winter can also lead to the death of the koi.
If feeding is stopped in winter (when the water temperature is below 8 degrees ), the dosage of AQUA-5 DRY can also be suspended until the water temperature exceeds 8 degrees again in spring. Of course, the filter should remain in operation during the cold winter months. However, the flow rate should only be approx. 20% of the summer operating rate. A smaller pump can be used for this purpose, or the existing pump can be throttled using a dimmer. Likewise, not all floor drains should be used and mainly the upper water should be circulated. Streams and waterfalls must be switched off in any case to prevent cooling. AQUA-5 DRY also contains winter-hardy bacterial strains (down to 4 degrees), but many bacteria still die in the cold winter, so it is advisable to add double the dose as a filter starter in spring, from 8 - 10 °C, or one dose each at 8 °C, 10 °C and above 12 °C. Special starter bacteria, sludge-degrading bacteria or similar are not required. With the double dose, your filter will be fully activated again in 24 to 48 hours. This also applies after heavy use of medication.
Please note: if you are using zeolite in the filter, do not add salt to the pond, as this would trigger an immediate surge in ammonia, which is life-threatening for the fish .
If you are caught off guard by winter, please do not chop a hole in the ice to provide ventilation, but use hot water or an immersion heater instead, as the noise could shock and kill the koi. The use of oxidisers has proven to be very effective in providing a good supply of oxygen without disturbing the fish with loud noises. This distributes oxygen throughout the pond in a cost-effective, safe manner without causing significant water movement, preventing the koi from suffocating due to lack of oxygen or dying from foul gases. Large 5-litre oxidisers can easily supply ponds of up to 25,000 litres (2 for 50,000 litres) over the winter. With careful winter planning, even in our latitudes, it is not inevitable that some koi will die every winter!
When temperatures rise above 8 °C in spring, it is recommended to change 30 to 50% of the water. This can also be done slowly over several days. If temperatures continue to rise, the daytime temperatures should be maintained overnight by heating, so that they rise slightly every day. This can also be achieved very cost-effectively with a homemade solar heater. (e.g. 20 to 50 metres of garden hose coiled on a black base and covered with a plexiglass sheet). With a small pump, you can achieve constantly warmer water. It is better to sacrifice the value of just one koi for heating costs than to find several koi, or even the entire stock, in a pitiful condition in the spring.
Oxygen deficiency always means stress and weakening of the koi's organism and weakening of the filter biology – whether in summer or winter.
