The principle of skimming has been practised in seawater for years. Thanks to the unique patented design of the Tornado protein skimmer, it is now possible to skim proteins in freshwater. This works as follows: the surface of the air bubble attracts dissolved substances in the water. This attraction concentrates chemicals, dirt particles, dyes and algae. The air is mixed with water using a Venturi. When this mixture is passed through the filter material (the "KNS" bio rings), there is a very long contact time between the air and water. This continuously changes the surface tension of the water, resulting in a solid foam. This foam is separated from the purified water by a perforated plate and removed. The foam contains the dirt particles that have been removed from the water. It is also worth mentioning that substances dissolved in the water, such as phosphate, ammonia, dyes and proteins, are filtered out of the water. This cannot be achieved with a normal filter, or only by adding chemicals.

- The filter is not dependent on bacteria and works immediately when the pump is switched on
