Salt
Maintaining a balanced salt concentration is essential for two reasons. Firstly, osmosis occurs between the fish tissue and the pond when there is a difference in salt content. Osmosis is the one-way diffusion of water from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution through a semi-permeable membrane.
Most fish have an internal salt concentration of 1.0% or 10 ppt. This concentration is higher than that of the environment. Therefore, water always flows from the pond into the fish.
The fish consumes energy because it has to continuously excrete water. If the
concentration in the water is greater than in the fish tissue, water is withdrawn from the fish, also known as dehydration.
Secondly, controlling the salt concentration in the water helps to prevent the proliferation of parasites that would harm fish health. Salt concentrations of 0.3% to 0.5% (3 to 5 ppt) disrupt the osmotic balance of most parasites. A salt concentration of 0.3% stops the toxic absorption of nitrite, while a concentration of 0.25% or more inhibits filamentous algae growth.
pH & temperature
pH & temperature are the basic test parameters for ponds. In order to thrive, koi need water quality that is very close to their natural environment. With the right water quality, your fish will remain healthier and more resistant to disease, allowing them to develop their full colour splendour.
Commercially available pH testers are used to check pH values and adjust them if necessary. It is important to ensure that adjustments are made over a certain period of time so as not to stress the fish too much.
Pond monitoring
Koi are cold-blooded fish that thrive in temperatures between 6°C and 30°C. Always check the water temperature in addition to the pH value. If you check the GH and KH values in your pond and the pH value and temperature in your pond are also optimal, the koi can develop perfectly, as this corresponds to their natural habitat.

- Do not use iodised table salt. Only use iodine-free salt.
- Before using salt for the first time, you should add it gradually so as not to upset the biological balance in the pond. Adding salt over a period of days or weeks gives the filter bacteria the opportunity to grow and maintain the biological balance.
- Never add salt directly to the pond. Direct contact between crystalline salt and koi can cause injuries similar to burns.
- Always dissolve salt in a bucket of pond water first. For small ponds, add the solution to the pond at the return flow. For large ponds, add it along the edge.
- To avoid overwhelming your koi, always increase the salt concentration over three days rather than all at once.
Info: Accurate measurement with this device is only possible for koi ponds. It is not possible to measure the salt content in other liquids.
• Use the calibration solution (item no. 70092) for the Koimedic Pro. The device fits perfectly into the opening. For the pH calibration solution, use item no. 60636.
• You can change the probe on the Koimedic Pro Salt & pH/°C Tester.
• The pH sensor lasts for approx. 1 year. If the measurement results are no longer displayed correctly or the calibration no longer works, you should replace the probe with a new one.
• Do not touch, rub or scratch the sensor. It is very sensitive and could break or lose its sensitivity.
• Although the device is waterproof, it must not be exposed to strong water pressure. Do not immerse the device in water! If it falls into water, remove it immediately and dry it with a soft cloth.
• Never store the device without the protective cap and protect it from high temperatures. Avoid direct sunlight. This shortens the service life of the measuring device and causes a shorter half-life of the sensor.
• Do not clean the device with thinner or cleaner. This will damage the unit. Only use a mild cleaning agent in combination with a soft cloth or rinse it off.
• The device is supplied with a set of calibration solutions. These are for single use only.
